The slogan ‘death to no one’ chanted on Wednesdays protests powerfully demonstrates the way that popular political culture has matured and evolved over the past 30 years – in stark contrast to formal politics as they currently stand. Not to get all Weberian on you, but you can see how the slogans of the Green Movement express its goal: to rationalize the irrational in Iran’s political system, to end arbitrariness, to silence brinkmanship. No more crazed ranting. No more empty, arcane ideology. Iran needs a policy that reflects its young, educated, and politically sophisticated people.
